FAQ

How to best brew Wayside tea?

Your Nan knew best – use a pot and a cosy!

Our brewing the instructions are based on a 250 ml or medium-sized mug. We recommend 1 heaped teaspoon of herbs per person or one teabag per mug. You can absolutely top up with boiling water for a second or third cup.

Our blends are created to bring you all the natural benefits of the plant, so aren’t processed or overly refined. The herbs used include the root, leaves, stems and flowers. The blends that are more twiggy will need to be brewed for longer, but the leafy green blends can be brewed more quickly. Essentially brew for 5-10 minutes.

Always brew using freshly boiled water. For the loose tea, ideally steep in a teapot covered with a cosy to keep the temperature high and gain the most flavour and nourishment from the herbs. If using the teabags, you can brew in a mug but I suggest covering with a saucer to keep the heat in.

Where do the herbs come from?

All our herbs are organic from reputable UK traders.

We use the finest organic herbs from companies based in the UK. I use one regular main supplier who I know well and another that is online. All of the herbs are organic. Some of them are also certified FairWild and Fairtrade. We would be happy to provide you further information on what is in our blends. The suppliers are companies with lots of expertise and they work to high standards of quality assurance. Each herb comes with its own quality certificate. We can provide the country of origin should you require that information.

Are there any added ingredients?

No – just the raw power of organic herbs.

No. In our loose leaf tins or refills, and our teabags, you are just drinking herbs pure and simple. Many supermarket teas contain synthetic flavourings or tea bags may contain fillers. Not with us. Not at all.

Are Wayside teas vegetarian or vegan?

Yes they are.

Yes. All of our teas are suitable for vegetarian or vegan folk. We do not use honey which you do sometimes find in teas.

How many teas can I drink every day?

Herbal teas are safe but for some people a couple of herbs should be drunk cautiously.

We know from research into green and black tea, that drinking 2 – 3 cups per day comes with health benefits from the levels of polyphenols in them. We suspect that drinking 2 – 3 cups of herbal teas per day is the same. These teas are safe to drink throughout the day into the evening.

There are recommendations within the tea industry that say do not drink more than 4 cups a day of cinnamon teas (teas using cinnamon bark) – none of my tea uses cinnamon. People with high blood pressure should also avoid drinking several cups of liquorice tea. Only a couple of our teas contain liquorice root and levels are less than 5% of the recipe. If you are a pregnant mum, do seek professional advice if you wish to drink herbal teas, particularly those that contain fennel or raspberry leaf. We do use fennel but less than 5% of the recipe.

What about sustainability?

We are passionate about this.

Although we are a tiny kitchen-based craft tea company, we take sustainability very seriously. We only use the finest organic herbs purchased from suppliers with good sustainability and ethical principles.

Our tin supplier is a B Corp, and our brown bag supplier complies with good forestry certification. The plastic inner bags that are sealed is Vegware® which is a patented compostable plant plastic. My own experiments at home show that the plastic disappears within two months of composting!

The teabags are unbleached paper with white cotton string. These can go in your general waste, or I do also find they compost within a few months.

I hope people will reuse the tins, or top them up using our smaller refill packs, or return them to me for reuse. Contact me to see how to do this.

The used herbs can go into your compost bin or food waste bin.
